Tune in, the SGT is ramping things up!

That’s right folks. As promised, it’s back to the plan- pass my last CCNP exam (ONT), and conquer the CCIE written exam. Look for the new articles to be posted within the next two weeks! Can’t wait! Let me know what you think of them!

Tampa Bay web design

It’s been a long time it seems since I’ve seriously updated this blog, but I have great news. On December 1st, my web design/development company, WebActa Solutions, LLC, will officially open for business. I am pretty excited about it all, and am working hard to make sure things go smoothly. I have a love for business, and a love for technology, so WebActa allows me to work in both arenas. I am still pursuing the CCIE, but have obviously bumped my original date back a bit. For those of you who didn’t follow me before, I was setting myself up to take and pass the written by Jan 1st, 2010, but now I’m looking at around April 2010. I’m giving myself time to get the business launched, and finish my CCNP up, then I will be back on track. Anyway, WebActa offers some great design, SEO services, and web hosting as well, so if you’re looking for a great deal on hosting, visit us at our site. It’s been awhile..

Damn! It’s been a long time since I posted here. I guess that goes hand in hand with my studying as of late as well. In my defense, I expected studying to slow down or stop completely due to my wedding, and all kinds of other stuff going on at the moment….and well, it did. For what it’s worth, my motivation is extremely high, and I’m anxious to take the written (looking to take it in January 2010, I think). I may be going out of town for work, and if I do, I’ll study plenty, and probably take the lab upon my return (late next year). Anyways..so here’s some highlights of what’s been going on..

-Went to the E6 (staff sergeant) promotion board, did very well. E6 in less then 5 years isn’t too bad! We’ll see how it all goes…someone at the board recommended that I compete for the Noncommissioned Officer of the Year competition..I’d rather devote time to the CCIE, but it’s a nice thought.

-Wedding is SO soon. 12 days! While Shanna is doing mostly wedding stuff (ceremony/reception), I’m in charge of anything logistical, or travel related for our guests coming into town..and it’s definitely keeping me busy. I just reserved our white wedding stretch limo for the night of the wedding, and we have a room at the Hilton reserved for that night. The next morning we’re flying to Miami and ultimately Jamaica, where we’ll have a private towncar to take us from Montego Bay to Sandals Negril (most travelers take a group bus to the resort). Supposedly upon arrival we’ll be greeted with Champagne and cheese..pretty cool! It’s crazy to think that someone like me is able to get that kind of treatment, even if only for a week. I can’t help at times like that but to think of my time in Iraq and the other bad places I’ve been…then realize I’m at the total opposite of the spectrum. It’s pretty wild.

-I’ve been running/hitting the gym a lot. Trying to get into shape for Jamaica. It’s going OK.

-In order to facilitate my promotion in the Army, I need to get the maximum promotion points available for civilian education possible. Since certifications count (only full, not individual tests), that means I NEED to finish my CCNP next month. After that, I have 3 more certifications that I can apply towards my promotion. I’ll probably be taking the Security+, CCDA, and CCDP, I think. That equals out to taking the following tests (in this order): ONT (complete CCNP), Security+, CCDA, CCDP. Not too bad. Lots of work, but I feel the only tests that will be really challenging will be the CCDP ARCH exam. Oh well. If all goes well (and I think it will), by X-mas, I’ll have several new certs, be promoted ($$), and then be heading full steam to the CCIE written with nothing to stop me. I think I was trying to be too ambitious by taking the written before Christmas. The original plan was to take the written in Jan/Feb anyways, so I’m actually still on track. Of course we’ll see how it goes..I have a pretty high standard when it comes to learning the material- I want to nail the written out of the park and start my lab prep the right way.

-Since just hearing of the new CCA (Cisco Certified Architect) cert coming out..I want the CCIE that much more, so I can pursue the CCA in a few years (once I meet the exp. requirement). The CCIE is still extremely sought after, but I feel the CCA would just place someone that much higher on the totem pole. Anyway..time to hit the pool…I ran today, and my legs are killing me (damn shin splints)…

Take care all, I’ll probably post some updates in the days leading up to the wedding, and after the wedding they’ll move back to their normal technical nature…and I will have more articles like the QoS series posted…

HSRP/VRRP/GLBP and some gym time

I started today (one of my days off) with a trip to the gym with Shanna (fiancee), and did some free weights, and came back home to get in a couple of hours of studying as the usual Florida storms kick in. I’m studying HSRP/VRRP/GLBP at the moment, taking a lot of notes, etc. It’s going pretty well I think. I just got word that I am most likely getting the network tech position I had sought after, which is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing in the sense that I’ll leave my NOC manager role, and get ‘in the trenches’ again, and get my hands dirty with networking once again. I’ll also not have to work anymore 12 hour shifts, weekends, or holidays…a true blessing. The downside is that we’ll just say I have a very strong chance of having to do some work out of town for about 6 months. I’m not looking forward to that, but if I do go anywhere, I promise..repeat I promise…..that I will take the CCIE R&S lab when I get back. That means I need to get this written exam knocked out around Christmas. If I keep the slow and steady pace I’m on now, it should be no problem. Once I start this new position, I should have more time to devote to studying (and posting up informational articles), so that’s always good.

Anyway, back to the books..since I left my CCIE exam cert guide at work on accident, I’m studying up with my BCMSN book until I can get there and pick up my IE book. Take care all..

Review, review, review, and some more review..

So I started the CCIE exam cert book again, and got up to Chapter 7 with the time I had fairly quickly, which was good, since pretty much everything was still fresh in my mind. I am going to lab some IP services stuff and HSRP/VRRP/GLBP today and tomorrow, and then hit the books again in a couple of days..I’ll post some updates soon…

Not dead!

“I wasn’t satisfied just to earn a good living. I was looking to make a statement” – Donald Trump

Well, I’m getting back into things. My life has been very busy in the last month or so. My older brother, Dan, is getting married in less then a month, I’m getting married myself in less than 2 months, going to Jamaica for a week, etc.  That being said, it’s time to hone in and get back to basics. I’m going to start at block A, and re-read the CCIE exam cert guide (v3.0, unfortunately..I will fill in the gaps with online docs, videos, and hands on experimentation), then take the CCIE written. My tentative goal is to take it just barely after the new year. If all goes well, I’ll pass it within a couple of weeks of us breaking into 2010. I hope then to take the ONT exam quickly, and schedule the CCIE lab exam for somewhere around late 2010.  I need to get back on the horse, because for a while, I lost my focus, and got a little overconfident I think. Now that I am back in the right mindset, I need to re-focus, and assess where I stand, and get to work. Just wanted to let everyone know that I’m still rolling, albeit very slowly.

Look for an article or two to show up in the next week or two if things go right. Not sure what subject it’ll be on yet. Take care…..stay classy, san diego.

CCIE Study Group

As some of you reading this may know, I frequent the TechExam forums (www.techexams.net). After being on there and seeing several people looking for CCIE study partners, I created a mailing list titled “CCIE Study Group”. The aim at the group is partially to be a study ‘group’, but also to be a discussion forum (in a sense) for those wishing to talk about issues they are labbing, or things they just can’t get a grip on. I hope people will take advantage of this, and use it to further their own studies. I look forward to it!

If you are interested, shoot me an e-mail at join@sgtccie.com. Make sure you make mention to wanting to be added to the CCIE Study Group mailing list also.

CCIE Written study plan

Well, an opportunity at work may have presented itself, and passing the CCIE written may set things in stone. That being said, I’m tentatively planning on taking my CCIE Written in mid to late July. What does this mean? LOTS of reading in the meantime! Here’s a rough layout of what I think I’ll do.

Today (May 25th) until June 1st- QoS

June 1st until June 21st- Anything layer 3..IGP/EGP/Misc layer 3 technologies

June 21st till July 1st- Multicast, Security

July 1st till July 15th- IPv6, MPLS, Layer 2 review

July 15th to July 21st- Review layer 3 and any weak sections

As I said, that’s a rough sketch of what I think I will do. My work schedule varies greatly, so it’s hard to say if Multicast will take a week or a month. I would PREFER to spend a minimum of 2 weeks per subject, but I just don’t have the time. I’ve got to take this thing before August if I want this new position. It’s a blessing and a curse, I suppose. By knocking the written out, I can schedule my lab, and get down to the real good stuff. Obviously the downside is I am rushing myself- But if I am able to get this new position, that means working amonst several CCIE candidates, and getting to do a LOT more hands-on then I get in my current role..it would undoubtedly help my CCIE lab preparations.

That’s all, gotta get back to reading QoS exam cert guide!

My CCIE status

Well, I am feeling a lot better. Whatever I had was horrible, and took about 7-9 days to get rid of. I don’t feel 100% yet, but I’m back at work for better or worse. Figured I would make a post with my current status as it relates to CCIE study. I’ve been studying cisco docs a lot lately, mostly centered around Frame Relay. I haven’t labbed much in the past week since I have been sick, and not gotten a lot of sleep. I plan on labbing tomorrow morning, but we’ll see how I feel after I get off work. Right now I work 7:30pm till 7:30am, so when I get home I’m usually ready to crash! Here’s some other updates:

  • The free CCNA audio nuggets are somewhat on the back burner right now. I have the class layout drawn up, and it’s ready to be recorded, but time has been so short lately, and the CCIE study takes precedence over those. Once things free up a bit I’m going to record that and post it.
  • I attended Jared Scrivener’s (Triple CCIE from IPexpert) Ask the expert session on Prefix-lists as it relates to BGP the other day. It was pretty good. I definitely left that session with a better understanding of prefix-lists. The following morning I labbed some BGP to play with prefix-lists a bit and get a more functional understanding of them. I think the key without doubt to prefix-lists is knowing your binary. If you know your binary and the layout of a prefix-list, you can figure it out. Maybe I’ll post something up once more time allows.
  • I’m realistically about 50-60% done with Switching and Frame Relay as far as technology based labs. I’ve completed all of the tasks in IE Vol I, but I’m going through the Cisco docs and using those as my yardstick. Once I feel like I’ve got the majority of topics covered I’ll move on to IGP.

That’s about it for now. I am going to hop off here and get back to reading. I make it a point to pick a subject each night at work and read about it in the cisco docs. Don’t know how much it’s helping, but it certainly can’t hurt!

Swine flu…

Well, I wish I had more to update you all with. I got very sick last week, with a temp of 102F, chills, body aches, and all the general symptoms that come with being “really” sick. I guess this was my karma, as I had been joking about how the H1N1 (formerly the “swine flu”) virus was being blown up by the media. Shortly after I got hit with whatever this is, and it hit me hard. I never saw the doctor, but I am recovering slowly, so it looks like I’ll live.

Being sick has put a damper in my studies for sure. I haven’t had any energy, let alone motivation, and as a result haven’t gotten much done. I did review some RIP/Frame Relay/Switching tech labs a little. I plan on getting a frame relay article up soon, so look for that. It won’t be so much a “how to”, but more of a “things to know..” type format.

At the moment I am beginning to get into the EIGRP tech labs. They shouldn’t be too bad, but we’ll see. I have always used OSPF, not EIGRP in enterprise environments, so this will be my first time really diving deep into the protocol.

Anyway, more to come in a little while. It’s time for me to transition from SGT CCIE to the daycare taxi for the little one..
